Marvel Studios concept artist Ian Joyner shared Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness concept art depicting Defender Strange’s death. Defender Strange was played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays several variations of his character in the Sam Raimi-directed sequel. Cumberbatch starred alongside Xochitl Gomez, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessopening, audiences were immediately immersed in one of the endless potentials of the multiverse, as Defender Strange attempted to help America Chavez (Gomez) escape a ribbon-like creature, later revealed to be under the influence of Scarlet Witch (Olsen). Wounded and unable to reach the mighty Book of Vishanti, Defender Strange attempts to take on America’s powers to stop the creature from threatening reality itself, but is stopped when he impales it. Now, on his Instagram, Joyner has shared a concept keyframe depicting Defender Strange’s tragic ending. In the Marvel Studios Visual Development Supervisor room, Defender Strange is on his back on a floating rock platform, casting a spell to defend himself from the Ribbon Creature. The artwork depicts Strange having already been impaled, his face heavily scarred. In his caption, the artist promised to share more concept art from Marvel’s visual development team as they share their own pieces. Check out Joyner’s post below.

As first glimpsed at the beginning Multiverse of Madness trailer, death wasn’t the end for Defender Strange in the film. After being stranded by Wanda in a dimension destroyed by an incursion, the MCU’s main Strange would “dreamwalk” into the corpse of Defender Strange, who was buried on Earth 616 after he and Wong (Wong) encountered the America for the first time. Piloting the zombie body of his Fallen variant, Strange uses a Sling Ring to travel to Wundergore Mountain, hoping to save America from Scarlet Witch.

Although his appearance was brief, Defender Strange still played a pivotal role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In the narrative, Defender Strange’s choice to sacrifice America sets up the conflict of Strange of 616 in terms of how he approaches difficult situations without concern for smaller, more personal consequences. The death and resurrection of Defender Strange also played into Raimi’s talents, allowing him to create a horror-inspired MCU film that stands apart from anything that has come before it. Joyner’s artwork is a thrilling behind-the-scenes look at Defender Strange’s brutal and tragic ending as the first multiversal spinoff that kicked off Strange’s final adventure.
