Love and Thunder Concept Arts Teases a Comic-Accurate Look for Gorr

Marvel generally chooses to keep the appearance of its heroes and villains similar to how they all appear in the comic book source material. That changed when it came to Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, an antagonist who donned a rather different look when he made his live-action debut in Thor: Love and Thunder. Turns out there was concept art designed by Marvel Studios featuring the character sporting a similar look to the version introduced in the movie. Thor comic by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic.

Marvel Studios visual development artist Jackson Sze has revealed concept art he painted of the character before Bale entered the equation. “Referring to the fantastic comic book source material, I mostly wanted to paint an image in cool light,” the artist explained on Tuesday afternoon. “Thank you Andy Park for directing the show and it’s always a pleasure to work with him!”

Bale previously told ComicBook.com that he wasn’t in the right shape for a specific Gorr look, so the studio and its artists came up with something else.

“I was coming out of a movie where you had to be quite lean,” Bale explained. “And then I saw the footage and I thought, ‘Well, that won’t be possible…and that thong thing that’s going on there. He looked in the comics like physically, you know, someone to reckon with. And I said, “Well, you know, that’s just not going to be possible in the state I’m in. And we have literally three days between me finishing a movie and going to Australia for quarantine and so I usually like to have a lot more time in between, but the pandemic meant things went that way. Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarokreturns to lead Thor: Love and Thunder. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Vin Diesel.
