Princess Leia wields a purple lightsaber in ‘Star Wars IX’ concept art

Concept art recently revealed for Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker shows Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia wielding a purple lightsaber in her duel with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker saw Daisy Ridley’s Rey take Leia’s Jedi weapon alongside the lightsaber previously wielded by Anakin and Luke Skywalker. Appearing as a Force ghost, Mark Hamill’s Luke tells Rey that Leia gave up the weapon as she finished her training.

A flashback sequence features a digitally aged Luke and Leia training on the last day of Leia’s training. While the film saw Leia wielding a blue lightsaber, that wasn’t always the plan.

Concept art shared on social media by star wars Artist Adam Brockbank reveals an early imagination of the flashback scene featuring Leia wielding a purple lightsaber.

The concept art also features training outfits that are clearly more inspired by real-world fencing equipment than the designs that ended up in the final film, which slanted towards more traditional outfits. star wars clothing designs.

It’s unknown why the color of Leia’s lightsaber was changed for the final version of The Rise of Skywalkeralthough it’s possible the weapon that appeared in concept art was just a placeholder and director JJ Abrams never intended to give Leia the rare saber color laser.

Through star wars movies, only Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu has ever wielded a purple lightsaber, a distinctive weapon that came at the actor’s request.

While a few other Jedi have been seen wielding purple-bladed lightsabers in external media, in both star wars Continuing the Legends and new Disney canon – like Revan and Ty Yorrick – the weapon remains a rare sight in the franchise.
