Why Zelda: Link’s Awakening For Switch has such a unique art style


Past E3 saw the announcement that Nintendo was working hard to bring the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the platform, but it wasn’t the only Zelda game we got to watch. There are a few Nintendo Direct presentations, they revealed an interesting remake of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. However, instead of the traditional top-down style (or even the traditional 3D style), we got something that looked more like hand-made figures than actual characters.

A look at Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and it is clear that a lot of thought and care has gone into its visual style. But what was the reason? If you had asked 1,000 Zelda fans, I doubt many came to Nintendo with this design in mind. So what was their reasoning behind this?

Speaking at Nintendo Treehouse Live during E3, series producer Eiji Aonuma was asked the same question.

“And so when I played the original version of Game Boy, it was on this little screen, and it looked like a small world, but also very big. So, there was kind of that tipping prospect, and that’s why I thought this miniature diorama art style would be perfect for this game.

While I haven’t got my hands on this game yet, I would say that between Aonuma’s explanation and the fact that this whole game is kind of a mental journey, that aesthetic gives it a proper dreamlike quality.
